Sonic 3D - These stages are pretty simple. I found it hard to judge when to jump into the UFOs. I don't think I've manged to finish one with the awkward 3D controls and poor collision detection. I like how it speeds up the longer you take and that you have the option to perfect the stages by collecting all the rings as well. Sonic 3K - Probably my favourite special stages. If you have the CPU Tails with you then his slight delay in copying your movement means he ends up losing rings more often than not. Sonic 2 - The half pipe was fun if you were playing as Sonic or Tails solo. ![]() It's difficult to control where you're going and one mistake ends the stage. Sonic 1 - I don't like the special stages here. But I seem to recall that the GBA games also suffered from the same problem as Mania in that they were just too obscure to frequently access in the first place. I can't really comment on the Chaotix, SMS, Game Gear and GBA game special stages since I haven't really played them much. All in all I'd say this is definitely one of the more objectionable aspects of Sonic Mania. Might be a bit of bias on my part since I've already played Sonic 3K to death, but the way the rings are placed in those games seem to let you casually run into them at a much more reasonable rate so you get more chances to finish them and hone your skills. This is also compounded by another major issue in that I think the hidden ring entrances to the special stages are just too damn cryptic and you really have to go out of your way to find them. Never made it past the 4th stage in regular Mania, and the Encore stages are so hard that I haven't even beaten the first one after 4 tries. It just doesn't feel very intuitive and it's like I've never figured out how to play it "properly". ![]() The controls have this slippery feel to them that I never quite get used to, and the tilting of the camera along with the arbitrary low rendering resolution (to get that 90's look I assume) makes it hard for me to notice the alternate paths available in some of the stages (which i assume are also vital shortcuts for keeping up with the UFO). Unfortunately I just don't think this is very fun to play and too difficult. They absolutely nailed the mid 90's goraud shaded 3D aesthetic of early 32-bit games which makes it stand out visually. ![]() Sonic Mania is like an amalgam of the Sonic CD and Sonic 2 designs.
